Electrical Activity after Stimulation and Electrocoagulation of the Human Frontal Lobe §

چکیده
In his Salmon Lectures in 1950, Fulton"0 suggested that radical lobotomy should be abandoned in favor of more restricted lesions in the medioventral quadrant of the frontal lobe. Delgado and Rosvold9 and Rosvold and Delgado' have shown that frontal lobe syndrome in the monkey may be produced by electrical stimulation or electrocoagulation of small areas in the head of the caudate nucleus, a structure which is within the limits of the medioventral quadrant of the frontal lobes. As a form of therapy for human patients we have performed electrocoagulation of certain points in the frontal lobes which were selected after functional exploration by means of electrodes implanted within the brain for a period of several days. A discussion of the preceding work in animals"5 and of the technique' has been published elsewhere. Implanted electrode techniques in human patients have also been used by Brazier, et al.,' Heath," and Sem-Jacobsen, et al."7 In this paper we submit information concerning electrical activity observed in the frontal lobes of nine patients after electrical stimulation and electrolytic destruction of selected points in these lobes.

Normal Electrical Activity of the Brain in Obsessive-Compulsive Patients After Anodal Stimulation of the Left Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex
Introduction: Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) has been used as a non-invasive method to increase the plasticity of brain. Growing evidence has shown several brain disorders such as depression, anxiety disorders, and chronic pain syndrome are improved following tDCS. In patients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), increased brain rhythm activity particularly in the frontal l...
متن کاملEEG Coherence During Resting State Over Frontal Regions in Paranormal Beliefs
Introduction: Paranormal beliefs are defined as believing in extrasensory perception, precognition, witchcraft, and telekinesis, magical thinking, psychokinesis, superstitions. Previous studies corroborate that executive brain functions underpin paranormal beliefs. To test causal hypotheses, neurophysiological studies of brain activity are required. Method: A sample of 20 students (10 females,...
متن کاملEffect of Motor Cortex Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS)on the Strength and Endurance performance of Healthy Collegiate Subjects
Introduction: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive technique used to modify the activity of the cortex of the brain. This form of current is capable of inducing changes in the electrical activity inside and outside of the neurons, which leads to a change in the resting membrane potential and thus improves the efficiency of the neural synapse. Therefore, the aim of th...
متن کاملElectrical cortical stimulation of the human prefrontal cortex evokes complex visual hallucinations.
Complex visual hallucinations are a well-known feature of electrical stimulation or epileptic discharge in the temporal lobe. It has been proposed that these visual hallucinations result from an electrical interference with the ventral visual processing stream in the lateral temporal lobe and the memory system in medial temporal structures, which explains their frequent visual and mnestic featu...
متن کاملEffect of Matricaria chamomilla extract on the electrically stimulation of ileum of guinea-pig in invitro model
Previous studies indicate that Matricaria chamomilla (MC), a folk remedy plant, is very useful in the treatment of spasmogenic bowel diseases but the way of its action is not clear. For this purpose, we studied the effect of MC extract on the electrically activation in Guinea-Pig ileum in an invitro model. We used guinea pig in this study. After of kill, we brouhght out a piece of ileum and fix...
